Good
news for Celtic fhans in Japan - Paddy's version 2 is nearly ready!
Stay tuned for more updates on our new home, which should be ready for
the European championships ;-)
After 10 years of having Paddy Foley's Irish pub in Roppongi,
Tokyo, as our home base, sadly on March 25, 2012 Paddy's poured its
last pint of Guinness and the green doors have now shut closed forever.
Tokyo's first Irish pub, Paddy's and its Irish owner Neil Day have been
a vital supporter of Tokyo CSC, St Patrick's Day and the Irish community
in Tokyo/Japan generally.
Happy
hogmanay and best wishes for 2012 from the Tokyo CSC! The past year
has been a very tough one for Japan (and elsewhere) and the Tokyo CSC
would like to thank everyone in the global Celtic family, particularly
Celtic FC, for their assistance to Japan's tsunami victims from the
March 11 disaster.
As a public gesture of thanks, Tokyo bhoy Nobutaka Yamanaka
displayed a thank you banner from Japan to Celtic at the Old Firm game
on December 28, 2011 at Celtic Park. Tokyo CSC would like to thank Celtic
FC for making this happen and also for the tannoy announcement at
half time! (The result wasn't bad either ;-)
Thanks also to everyone who helped Nobu fly the flag!
For pics from Nobu's tour, including the Dunfermline game on January
2nd, see 2011 Pics
- Tokyo CSC On Tour.
Check
out our Merchandise
page for the latest addition to our collector items - a limited edition,
10th anniversary Tokyo CSC club badge. Get one before they disappear!
In the meantime, stay posted to our Events
page for details of upcoming matches at Paddy's supported by the club.
(The last one, against Motherwell on November 6, had a pleasing result
;-)
Thanks
for all the support following Japan's devastating earthquake and resulting
tsunami that struck Friday, March 11. Thanks to our bidders from Australia,
Holland, Japan, the UK and USA, the Tokyo CSC’s ebay auction
of Celtic and Japan-related memorabilia raised around US$500 for the
All Hands Volunteers Project
Tohoku, which is directly assisting the recovery effort
in the Tohoku region. Every bit helps in the recovery effort, and we
thank you for again for the fantastic support from Celtic's global family!
Tokyo CSC club secretary Martin Burns earlier broadcast
a message of thanks from the club - click here
to watch the video.
The
Tokyo CSC wrapped up a memorable season (sadly for many wrong
reasons) with its end of season party on May 21, 2011, the night
of the Scottish Cup final between Celtic and Motherwell.
Photos here
from another great night for the club, on a night when Neil Lennon secured
his first trophy as manager of Celtic FC.
Congratulations
to Iain Monk and the Scottish Civil Service CSC in Edinburgh
for raising 1,000 pounds for Japan disaster relief on April 11, 2011.
Picture here

Mr Hosoya, centre.
Tokyo
CSC video and actor bhoy Martin Burns proudly provided the
voiceover for the official Celtic Jock Stein video, launched at the
unveiling of the Jock Stein statue at Celtic Park on Saturday, March
5, 2011. Congratulations Martin - click here
to see the video.
Martin has also compiled another video podcast, this time featuring
the latest Old Firm game, a Neilly Mochan tribute and the Good Child
Foundation's "Just can't get enough". See Tokyo
CSC Video Podcast V - we
just can't enough of it!
Tokyo
CSC's prayers were answered on December 27, 2010, when club members
Hide & Asuka's baby daughter Tsubasa-chan underwent a successful
heart operation. The 4-month-old is now recuperating and we wish her
well for a complete recovery! The good news was followed by a good result
on the football pitch, with Celtic winning the New Year derby
against Rangers. Fingers crossed the rest of the 2011 goes as well!
Championees,
championees..Tokyo CSC emerged champions on Saturday, October
10, 2009 in a three-team charity tournament with members of the visiting
Tartan Army side and the YCAC Over 35s, held at the Yokohama Country
& Athletic Club. The games were held as part of Scotland's friendly
with Japan the same evening. Funds raised from the event will be donated
to the Tokyo CSC's preferred charity, Carillon Kodomo no Ie (Carillon
Children's Home). The Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal has donated 1,000
pounds to Carillon as part of its goodwill policy in countries hosting
Scotland games. Congratulations to everyone, and better luck next time
Scotland! Pics of the event coming soon..
Skyperfectv
have announced they will not be broadcasting the SPL on Japanese TV
in 2009/10. The news follows the departure of Japan superstar Shunsuke
Nakamura to Spain, although Japanese interest in Celtic FC remains
with the presence of Koki Mizuno. Call Skyperfectv to let them
know they made the wrong decision - see the TV
page for contact details.
The Tokyo
CSC end of season party was held on the last game of the season
against Hearts - Sunday, May 24, at Paddy Foley's Irish
pub in Roppongi. Despite the disappointing final outcome, a great night
was had by all. See EOS
2009 for pics from the night (two pages), and click here
for the award results.
The Tokyo
CSC put in another brave performance in the 2009 Footy Japan/YC&AC
Charity 6's on March 20. Looking the part in our new team
kit, the bhoys managed to win the race to the bar by making an early
exit from the 17-team competition. In the best traditions of Celtic,
the team helped the organisers raise over 300,000 yen to help street
kids in Cambodia. We'll be back next year, hopefully with some more
subs next time! See Charity
6's 2009 for some pics from the day.
St Pat's
Day has sadly ended for another year but the Tokyo CSC bhoys
and ghirls got into the swing of things by joining the official parade
at Omotesando, Harajuku on March 15, 2009. A suprisingly large
number of club members managed to find their way to Paddy's for
the League Cup final (midnight kickoff) which Celtic managed
to win 2-0 over Rangers, both goals scored by Irishmen! You couldn't
write a better scipt...see 2009
pics for some shots from the day.
Glasgow
Herald senior sports writer Martin Greig has released a brilliant
new book on Japanese star Shunsuke Nakamura, titled "The
Zen of Naka". The Tokyo CSC also gets a mention for our
help with the author's research. Click on the link on the Merchandise
page to get your copy!
BBC cameras
were at Paddy Foley's on Friday, August 1 for the pre-season
friendly against Spurs. The team from the Beeb were filming a documentary
on football fans abroad - should make for interesting viewing!
Celtic
coaches were in Japan for football camps in August 2008,
for players aged 6 to 15 years. See http://www.totalfootball.co.jp/Celtic_FC_Camps.html
for more info, or contact Stuart Larman in Tokyo on
03-6440-0533 (email slarman@totalfootball.co.jp).
Here's hoping they find another Shunsuke..
Celtic won
3 league tiles in a row on the last day of the 2007/08 season, with
a 1-0 win away to Dundee United enough to secure the championship. For
the players and club, it was a fitting tribute to Celtic legend Tommy
Burns, who tragically died aged 51, after fighting a long battle
against cancer. Burns will be remembered for his lifelong commitment
to the Hoops and the free-flowing, attacking style of football he brought
to the team as manager. 2008 also saw the shock and tragic death of
ex-Celtic player Phil O'Donnell. Both Phil and Tommy are sorely
missed, and in memory of Phil the club held a tribute match on Sunday,
May 25, shown exclusively live at Paddy Foley's as part of the Tokyo
CSC's end of season party. Click here
for pics of the title decider, and here
for the party pics.
Celtic
secured a historic league and Cup double in 2006/07 with a 1-0 victory
over Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup final on 26th May, also
the night of the Tokyo CSC's end of season party! Shunsuke Nakamura
was the runaway winner in the Player of the Season Awards (click
here
for all the details) while pics of the night are available via this
link..
Another 31,000 yen was also raised on the night for our supported charity,
Carillon Children's House - see our Charity
page for more info.
Hit by injury
problems and key absentees, the Tokyo CSC put up a brave fight
at the 2007 Footy Japan/YC&AC Charity 6s on 21st March but failed
to defend the plate title won the previous year. The bhoys put up a
brave show though, eventually going out to the Wall Street Clash. The
real winner though was UNICEF with another sizeable charity donation.
The Tokyo CSC followed up in April 2008, and although the bhoys
silky skills were foiled by a poor pitch (?!) the real winner was UNICEF,
with a record of over 650,000 yen raised. See here
for all the 2008 pics..
Celtic's
historic entry to the round of 16 in the European Champions League in
season 2006/07 gave the club a mouthwatering tie against Italian giants
AC Milan. TV cameras were present for the first leg and it was
a huge night for all involved - as you can tell from the pics..
UEFA Champions League TV has now broadcast the show featuring our club
to watch it..
Glasgow rockers
Mogwai joined the Tokyo CSC at Paddy's for the
12th November game against St. Mirren. A hat trick from Thomas Gravesen
got the bhoys a 3-1 win, no thanks to another strong performance from
local hero Shunsuke Nakamura. But it was the surprise visit from
the celebs that had Paddy's rocking. See Mogwai
for pics from the night.
The Tokyo
CSC unfurled its new flag at the 23rd September Old Firm
game - another enjoyable affair with two goals from Celtic new bhoys
Thomas Gravesen and Kenny Miller securing victory in the
derby. Pics of the event are available here.
They came,
they saw, they got humped. Celtic FC played its first match on Japanese
shores on 3rd August in a friendly against Shunsuke Nakamura's
former club, Yokohama F Marinos. Losing the match 3-0 was disappointing
to the many thousands of bhoys fans at the game in Yokohama, especially
with Naka's substitution after 65 minutes. It was particularly galling
that the players failed to give their fans, some of whom had travelled
from Hong Kong and elsewhere and who were in strong voice, any acknowledgement
after the final whistle.
But for the Tokyo CSC, the opportunity to see the bhoys without travelling
thousands of miles was a god-send, and manager Gordon Strachan gave
the club a great reception during the presentation of the Tokyo CSC's
player of the year awards. Our sponsor Paddy Foley's put on a
great pre-match party too! The discount on tickets acquired for the
Tokyo CSC's 100-odd support will help our charity, Carillon Kodomo
no Ie (Carillon Children's Home) in its work to protect abused children.
Come back soon bhoys, but don't forget to bow next time - it's Japan!
of the event..
The Tokyo
CSC and Celtic celebrated winning the 2005/06 SPL championship
in style with a 4-1 win over Kilmarnock on 9th April. Thanks
to everyone who came out to Paddy's to watch the game, and also
those who contributed to our charity raffle - another 10,000 yen was
raised for the children's shelter. Around 40 members of the club also
went to Saitama Stadium on 13th May for the Japan v Scotland game,
which finished 0-0, making the Scots the Kirin Cup champions!
The
Tokyo CSC followed the example of the Glasgow bhoys by winning a
trophy in the YC&AC Charity Sixes football tournament
on 21st March! The bhoys went undefeated, conceding only a single goal
in seven games. Hard to believe, but we've got the pictures to prove
it - see Charity
Sixes.
Japanese
fans of the bhoys now have their own website - www.celticfc.jp
Check it out for all the latest official information from Celtic Park.
Bhoys fans might also want to have a look at a forum, www.celticminded.com.
There's a Japanese section and over 100 Japanese fans on it already!
The tremendous
news of Japan international Shunsuke Nakamura signing for Celtic
generated a huge amount of interest overnight in a club and league previously
generally ignored in the Land of the Rising Sun. Both local media (Fuji
TV) and Scottish (BBC Scotland, Glasgow Herald, Evening Times, Scottish
Sun, Radio Clyde and others) made inquiries to the Tokyo CSC
for information about Celtic's new star - hopefully he can handle the
pressure. Skyperfectv announced the LIVE screening of all Celtic's Scottish
Premier League matches in the 2005/06 season - a first for Japan - with
the first game shown Nakamura's sparkling debut against Dundee United.
The momentum produced a bumper turnout at the club's first event of
the new season - the 20 August Old Firm game. Unfortunately the
bhoy from Yokohama was sacrificed in the 54th minute due to Alan Thompson's
dismissal, and the result went against the bhoys. Our second game at
Paddy's against Hearts on 15 October ended up all square,
but the third one against Rangers on 19 November saw the
bhoys triumph 3-0, in no small part due to our Japanese bhoy! Thanks
to everyone who turned out, and also those who supported the charity
raffle.
The long
anticipated 2nd Buckfast Invitational golf tournament was held
on July 9, 2005, in Kashiwa, organised by golfbhoy Clarkey, and
what a great day out it was.
Clarkey managed to win the Buckfast trophy for the second
straight event, although unfortunately due to a grape shortage the winner
indulged in a bottle of 20/20 instead of the monks' tonic. Three picture
pages of shame are available (see
Buckie Golf).
After the
disappointment of the last day of the 2004/05 Scottish Premier League
season, the Tokyo CSC celebrated a much better result after the
club's end-of-season party on Saturday, 28 May, with victory over Dundee
United in the Scottish Cup final. Yet again the bhoys kept
us on edge with only a narrow 1-0 lead thanks to an Alan Thompson
goal, but it proved to be enough in the end, and Martin O'Neill
finished his five-year spell with Celtic on a successful note. Thanks
MON for all the memories - the king is dead, long live the king! See
Cup
Final '05 for pics of the
night.
The
Tokyo CSC held its official 2003/04 end-of-season party on the
night of the Scottish Cup final, held 22 May, 2004. With 2.5
hours of nomihodai and food, the 20-odd bhoys and ghirls who attended
were well prepared for the 11 p.m. kickoff. And in sensational Swede
Henrik Larsson's last competitive match for the Hoops, the bhoys
didn't disappoint, winning 3-1 after going a goal behind thanks to two
strikes from the King of Kings and another from Stan Petrov. Thanks
to another raffle, for which Paddy's contributed some champagne, the
Tokyo CSC raised another 12,000 yen for our sponsored charity (see the
Charity
page). The Tokyo CSC would like to thank Paddy Foley's
for hosting us and everyone who joined the Tokyo Celts in supporting
the bhoys during the League and Cup double-winning season of 2003/04.
The King is dead - long live the King. Photos of the night are online
at 2004
End of Season Party.
The
Tokyo CSC flew the flag for Glasgow Celtic FC at the St.
Patrick's Day parade in Omotesando, Tokyo, on Sunday 14 March, 2004,
a day in which the Hoops were definitely the flavour (see the
Photos).
Sadly the lack of free Guinness put a dampener on proceedings and we
hope this is rectified for next year..
Tokyo
Tims Anthony, Andy, Eugene, Paul & Stevie travelled to Seville for
the 21 May, 2003, UEFA Cup Final against FC Porto. Read
about the preparations in
The Scottish Sun article on
the lhads (well Andy, anyway!). The bhoys and ghirls left behind had
a big night at Paddy's, which you can witness from the
Photos,
including the surprise appearance of a celebrity Scottish actor!
